Our Waterside Depot

It is our policy to source the majority of our fresh fish locally and sustainably

Our own fleet of upwards of 50 boats means we are intimately involved with the local fishing community on the Kent and Sussex coasts and actively support them by paying fair prices promptly. These relationships mean we have at our disposal an intimate understanding of seasonal runs, and up to the minute awareness of quota allocations.

ABOUT RYE

We have always sourced fish direct from local boats and it’s our policy to source the majority of our fresh fish locally and sustainably.

In 2015 we purchased and set up our depot in Rye to allow fishermen to land from their boats directly into us and over the years this approach has proved very successful, so much so that we now have upwards of 50 boats landing into us exclusively.

The vast majority of our Rye fleet are day boats, so the fishermen catch and return on the same tide, We collect the fish daily and often it’s with our customers’ the next morning, meaning you really can’t get fresher!

As such, we are intimately involved with the local fishing community in Rye and all along the Kent and Sussex coasts and we actively support them by paying fair prices promptly. These longstanding relationships with fishermen and their families mean we have at our disposal an intimate understanding of seasonal runs, and up to the minute awareness of quota allocations.

With our focus on using responsible sourcing as much as we can, our clients can trust that we value fish enough to ensure it is here to stay. All our catches are traceable to port and even to the individual named boats.

We are proud to purchase from local fisherman and support small

We are registered as First Buyers, meaning Chapman's is allowed to buy direct from fishing boats. Our vans end their delivery runs at the coast, where they collect local fish straight from the nets to be used for the next day's delivery; dramatically reducing food miles and our carbon footprint when compared to a centralised delivery structure.

All our catches are traceable to port and even to the individual named boats. In instances where items are not available locally, yet in a lot of demand from customers, we will buy fish from the markets.

Newlyn Market

Purchasing fresh fish directly from the market offers numerous benefits that elevate both the culinary experience and overall well-being. Firstly, the quality of the fish is unparalleled, as it is sourced directly from local fishermen and suppliers, ensuring maximum freshness and flavor. By cutting out intermediaries, consumers can trace the journey of their seafood, fostering transparency and trust in the sourcing process. Moreover, buying from the market provides a wide selection of species, allowing individuals to explore diverse tastes and nutritional profiles. This direct interaction also supports local economies and sustains traditional fishing communities, promoting environmental stewardship and preserving cultural heritage.
